The Federal Trade Commission announced on Thursday (12/17) the first law enforcement crackdown on deceptive claims in the cannabidiol (CBD) market. The basis behind the action is to cut-out all deceptive marketing in the industry focusing on scientifically unsupported claims about their CBD products ability to treat serious health conditions, including cancer, heart disease, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, among others.
The FTC is taking specific action against six sellers of CBD-containing products for such unsupported claims. They announced in a press release, “The six settlements announced today send a clear message to the burgeoning CBD industry: Don’t make spurious health claims that are unsupported by medical science,” said Andrew Smith, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “Otherwise, don’t be surprised if you hear from the FTC.” These six companies and owners face monetary fines among other punishments like promises to not make such scientifically supported claims in the future.
The bottom line is that the CBD industry has again caught the eye of the federal government. As a seller of CBD products, you may be a big believer in the many great properties of cannabidiol (as we are!) but you must know how to appropriately market these products or face potential fines!
