Attention EEA region merchants,
As we have previously communicated, stricter security standards have come into force for online payments as a result of PSD2. This latest EU Payment Services Directive, effective from 14 September 2019, stipulates a requirement for strong customer authentication (SCA).
In order to ensure a uniform and consistent approach throughout all markets of the European Economic Area (EEA), the European Banking Authority (EBA) has allowed a temporary transition period for SCA migration. The official deadline for SCA migration as communicated by the EBA is 31 December 2020.
As recommended by our Acquiring partner Wirecard Bank AG, to ensure a fully successful SCA migration before the deadline, we strongly recommend implementing the following three-phased approach for migration to 3D Secure 2 (3DS2). As a merchant, your migration plan should ideally follow this timeline:
- Phase I: 1 January–31 May 2020 – Go live, migrate, and monitor 3D Secure 2
- Phase II: 1 June–30 September 2020 – Test and go live with SCA exemptions
- Phase III: 1 October–31 December 2020 – Optimize and prepare for compliance
We encourage you to fully migrate by the end of September 2020 to ensure enough time for optimization and preparation before final enforcement on 31 December 2020.
Premier Payments Online will continue to guide you through SCA migration and help you optimize your 3D Secure 2 implementation to take full advantage of the upgrade. You can expect more helpful communication from us in the coming months. Should you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
